Is beekeeping an expensive hobby?

Question by R B: Is beekeeping an expensive hobby?

We just started a hive last season after a poor walnut and apple crop !!

A basic beginners kit (everything but the bees) cost us just shy of $ 300, and the bees we got from a local keeper who’d removed a hive from a school yard for about $ 75.

An expensive START… but this year we look like we will have a high yield of fruit and nuts, as well as enough honey for Christmas gifts for everyone !! We figure it will pay for itself in 2 years.

GOOD LUCK !!

It may be expensive to get started, but after that, it’s fairly easy. They look after themselves, but you need to watch that all is well with them.

But small-scale beekeeping doesn’t require huge amounts of money, time or space, and it can be done just about any place where flowers bloom. Why don’t you just get your own bees. Every year, there is a queen that leaves the nest with some workers, and she goes off to build a new nest. They swarm — make a huge mass of bees around the queen. They are fairly docile, if you don’t harm them. It’s very easy to just pick off the whole pile (with the queen inside) and move them to where you want them — and hope they like the house you make for them! That won’t cost much at all.
