Bees (a lineage within the superfamily Apoidea) are flying insects, closely related to wasps and ants. There are approximately 20,000 species of bees, and they may be found on every continent except Antarctica. Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used for food for the brood.

A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is not a bee or an ant. Less familiar, the suborder Symphyta includes the sawflies and wood wasps, which differ from the Apocrita by having a broad connection between the thorax and abdomen. Also, Symphyta larvae are mostly herbivorous and “caterpillarlike”, whereas those of Apocrita are largely predatory or parasitic

Yellowjackets are black-and-yellow wasps of the genus Vespula or Dolichovespula (though some can be black-and-white, the most notable of these being the bald-faced hornet, Dolichovespula maculata). They can be identified by their distinctive combination of black-and-yellow color, small size (slightly larger than a bee), and entirely black antennae. In some parts of the south eastern U.S., they are called meat bees

You should buy some books and videos to give you a visual learning experience. I think it’s awesome that you are considering going into this business, considering the bee population is slowly dying out :)

Success in attracting Honey Bees?

Question by Faerie S: Success in attracting Honey Bees?
I would like to start beekeeping, and we will be building our own box. I would like to know if you can attract bees to a new box, or would you do better at purchasing them? I have seen honey bees in our area, but am worried that they may be someone’s?! If I did attract them, how would I go about getting the queen?

Answer by dextercat101
Buy a queen and some worker bees. Plant plenty of bee-friendly flowers. The rest will just click over time.

That is why they have beekeepers. Would you want a bee to take you out of your home and put you in boxes? Then smoke you out?

I have never had bees before, and I want to start. Is there any specific type of honeybee I need to get? Is there any specific right way to raise bees for honey? Just tell me all I need to know about beekeeping please.

Did you know that the colony collapse disorder is not affecting organic bee hives?

Question by Hope is certainty (Ross): Did you know that the colony collapse disorder is not affecting organic bee hives?
Here is a quote and a link http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_5194.cfm

Sharon Labchuk is a longtime environmental activist and part-time organic beekeeper from Prince Edward Island. She has twice run for a seat in Ottawa’s House of Commons, making strong showings around 5% for Canada’s fledgling Green Party. She is also leader of the provincial wing of her party. In a widely circulated email, she wrote:

“I’m on an organic beekeeping list of about 1,000 people, mostly Americans, and no one in the organic beekeeping world, including commercial beekeepers, is reporting colony collapse on this list. The problem with the big commercial guys is that they put pesticides in their hives to fumigate for varroa mites, and they feed antibiotics to the bees. They also haul the hives by truck all over the place to make more money with pollination services, which stresses the colonies.”

Answer by campbelp2002
No, I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information.

Many of the things you mention seem likely to be possible causes. Especially moving the hives all the time. I bet that really confuses the Bees. I always wondered how they could even do that without loosing half the bees every time they make a move.
