Did you know that the colony collapse disorder is not affecting organic bee hives?
Question by Hope is certainty (Ross): Did you know that the colony collapse disorder is not affecting organic bee hives?
Here is a quote and a link http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_5194.cfm
Sharon Labchuk is a longtime environmental activist and part-time organic beekeeper from Prince Edward Island. She has twice run for a seat in Ottawa’s House of Commons, making strong showings around 5% for Canada’s fledgling Green Party. She is also leader of the provincial wing of her party. In a widely circulated email, she wrote:
“I’m on an organic beekeeping list of about 1,000 people, mostly Americans, and no one in the organic beekeeping world, including commercial beekeepers, is reporting colony collapse on this list. The problem with the big commercial guys is that they put pesticides in their hives to fumigate for varroa mites, and they feed antibiotics to the bees. They also haul the hives by truck all over the place to make more money with pollination services, which stresses the colonies.”

No, I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information.
Many of the things you mention seem likely to be possible causes. Especially moving the hives all the time. I bet that really confuses the Bees. I always wondered how they could even do that without loosing half the bees every time they make a move.

Beekeeping Information: Getting Started Today
Beekeeping is the controlled raising of bees in hive in order to gather honey or to pollinate your plants. It has a long history and is not only a wonderful hobby, beekeeping is also a profitable business. But in order to reap the benefits of this fascinating hobby, a good deal of knowledge must first be learned.
In order to get started in beekeeping, you have to make sure that you have the right equipment and right beekeeping information. The first thing that a beekeeper needs is the basic components of the hive. Beekeepers can start their bee business by buying package bees, buying an already established bee colony or collecting by swarms. But for beginners it is recommended to buy packaged bees. You will also need protective gear, equipment for handling the honey, and a bee source. Typically honey bees do not sting unless they have to defend themselves or the hive. Beekeepers use protective gear like beekeeping suits, gloves, hat and veil. They also use smokers to subdue the bees in order to work with the colony and the hive. A smoker is device that emits smoke. The smoke creates a response within the bees that makes them prepare to evacuate the hive due to a fire. It also distorts the pheromone that the guard bees release to the other members of the hive upon the realization of an intruder.
Honeybees are extremely social insects that live in hives as a colony that can contain thousands of bees. All of the bees work together to build a nest, collect food and to rear the young. Beekeepers are able to work with the natural instincts of the honey bee to gather honey that can be used or sold for profit. Removing the honey from the hive can sometimes be challenging but it is important not to leave the honey in the hive for too long. If it is left in the hive for a long time, the color of the honey will be darker and the bees will not have more room to store honey. The color of the honey does not affect the taste but most people would prefer light colored honey. It is equally important not to harvest the honey too soon. Honey that is harvested too soon contains too much water and it might spoil or ferment. The best indicator of when honey is ready is the bees. When the beekeeper sees wax caps over the honey cells, then it is time for harvesting the honey. The best time to harvest the honey is during a sunny day or in the morning when your bees are busy.
Before one starts beekeeping they have to make sure that your local government allows beekeeping in your area. But, the benefits of adding bees to an area are large. Without mellow honey bees dominating an area, larger and more aggressive insects like wasps and hornets will move in. Plus, as everyone knows, bees are the best thing for the local plant life. As long as the beekeeper places their hives in an area that is free from houses and recreational areas, your experience with beekeeping will be fulfilling.

Wow, is that hard work, but it does not pay much.
Contact your local bee club, they can help you, I’m sure. But for migratory beekeepers you mak need to go non-local.

The Facts Required By The Novice Beekeeper
To enjoy beekeeping to the full you need, before you start, to learn the essential priciples. Outlined here are some basic thoughts that will form a basis for more detailed investigations
Honey Bees are sociable insects that gather together in colonies as big as 50,000. The queen whose main job is to produce eggs rules the hive. The worker bees toil endlessly collecting the nectar, storing the honey and guarding the colony. The male, drone, bees do nothing for the colony except wait for the instance every two years or so when a new queen bee needs fertilizing. A number of queen larvae are laid and the bees will raise these into new queens who will then take half the colony to discover a new home. During the swarm the queen will couple with several males and when the swarm locate a new nest is ready to start laying eggs and thus produce a new hive.
It is the instint of honey bees to create honey in beeswax combs by exploiting this instinct the beekeeper makes his harvest. To maximize the honey crop the beekeeper supplies a hive for a colony of bees to employ. In order to expand the quantities of honey the beekeeper will deter the development of queen bees and always crop the honey at the right time. To increase his stock of bees the beekeeper will allow queen bees to deveop and split the larvae from the hive on hatching. A new queen is placed with a selection of bees from an existing hive into a new hive they will found a new colony and the beekeeper has a new hive.
]]>
Grearious, well mannered, non aggresive honey bees will defend their colony vigorously if they feel threatened. Handle bees carefully and they will rarely sting. Belligerent wasps and hornets rarely share an region with honey bees.
The Langsthroth is the most popular design of the central piece of beekeeping equipment – the hive. The smoker developedldesigned in the early days of beekeeping is still used to subdue the bees due to be handled and inspected. Beekeeping suppliers have catalogues full of tools to aid the beekeeper.
The bee sting resistant quality is essential in the light colored overall which is the first item of protective gear. The bees attracted by the breath of the beekeeper will predominantly attack the face and neck this makes the hat and veil the most important piece of protective gear. Experienced beekeepers rarely wear gloves, but always start by wearing them.
Reaping the first crop of honey can be overwhelming but is not problematic if you stick to the rules. It is essential that the honey is removed at the correct time. There is a peril that the honey will spoil if gathered too early as the water content will be high. The longer the honey is left the darker it becomes and people choose the light ‘honey’ color.
It is important that you check the local by laws regarding beekeeping in your district. Your neighbors must be considered and you should talk your intentions fully before starting. There are so many advantages to having honey bees in the neighbourhood it is easy to persuade people to your view.

how much to you think i need to be Self sufficient?
Question by ladyseabreezemp1640: how much to you think i need to be Self sufficient?

I suggest you get books about sustainability, and gardening. Some variables are impossible for us to guess at.
You will need some kind of freezer to store the meat, a power source if you are going to be totally self sufficient, like a generator at a waterfall or wind power. Solar is good, but the photovoltaic panels take about 7 – 10 years to recoup your expenditure.
Or you can go “total primitive” and avoid all kinds of consumerism. Live like a pre-industrial society.
Our best guesses would do you an injustice. if there are 20 of you, have meetings and sort this stuff out. Choose a state/city/town where you get the best climate for your preferred food crops and livestock options. I love lamb meat and would choose to grow lambs, but Florida is not a good choice in that case!~

Buying Used Beekeeping Equipment – Avoid The Traps
The price of some new beekeeping equipment can be a bit expensive for some people wanting to start beekeeping. One alternative to this problem is to purchase used beekeeping equipment.
While used equipment can save you money it’s not always the best way to go. Used beekeeping equipment can potentially be contaminated with pests and diseases. The best used beekeeping equipment for a beginner to purchase is anything that can be easily cleaned and sterilized to prevent any contamination problems.
Used beekeeping clothing can be easily cleaned and disinfected. All you will need to check is that the suit or hat is in good condition without any holes or excessive wear.
The smoker is another piece of equipment that is unlikely to cause any problems if you get a used one. The smoker has very little contact with the hive and the heat means that any contamination should be burnt off.
]]>
Extractors and other equipment for processing the honey is also another area where purchasing used equipment can be a cost saving. As many extractors and processing equipment can also be cleaned and sterilized by following the recommend procedures, there is reduced risk of introducing contamination.
Buying a used hive is another matter and it can be a big problem for an inexperienced beekeeper. The hive is where pest and disease problems are most likely to occur so you would need to be certain that you are buying a disease and pest free hive.
Only buy used a used hive from a disease free apiary. It is important to ask to see the inspection history of any used hive you are considering and if it is to be purchased together with the bees, you would probably be best to ask for a honey culture test to check the health of the hive.
Another problem for new beekeepers is determining what is a fair value for a used hive. As hives are constructed from wood their usable lifespan is determined by how well the timber has been protected from the elements.
Not all used beekeeping equipment is contaminated and many reputable beekeepers do sell off clean usable equipment, its just that an inexperience person may not know how to properly check the equipment and seller.
One cost saving alternative to buying a used hive is to build one your self. Building a hive does require some woodworking skill so it’s not for everyone but it can save you a significant amount.
Buying used beekeeping equipment can save you a significant amount on the initial start up costs. Just be very particular about what equipment and supplies you buy and understand that some used beekeeping equipment can come with unexpected consequences if you’re not careful.

If I raise a beehive how far should it be from my house?
Question by Jello F: If I raise a beehive how far should it be from my house?
please answer thanks and hope someone has experience with beekeeping!!!

Answer by Steve H
I am not a bee keeper, but my neighbor has a couple of hives so I called him. I am not sure how much help his answer will be, but here it is anyway: As close as you feel comfortable with. He said that as long as you don’t have kids or pets who will be messing with the hive, you can put it within a couple of feet of the house, although he didn’t suggest it.
His are a couple of hundred feet behind his house, and that keeps the bees safely away from the house and guests that aren’t familiar with bees, but close enough that checking the hives doesn’t require a marathon hike.
