i LOVE using beeswax and i want to “grow my own” but i dont want a full scale bee farm just a single small hive that i can take wax capings from every once in a while…the bees can keep the honey. is that possible? how would i take the cappings? is there a premade single hive or easy plan on makeing one, i want as little maintnance as possible, just let the bees live there lives and ill take the wax. no getting stung to death would be nice to

I’m going to try and keep bees if everything goes according to plan, however I am completely ignorant fo botany, so maybe you could help me out here.

The area where I’d like to keep the bees would be around 47N latitude, in central europe and I was wondering what flowers would be suitable for the climate that would work with the little guys.

It would be nice if the flowers would just take care of themselves without me doing much more than watering and if they could cover a wide area. About a hectare of land is available.

Bees that I’ll be using are called Carnolian (Apis Mellifera Carnica), if that’s any help.

Yes i support beekeeping,as long as they care for them properly.
But then some people should not even own a dog or cat.
Perhaps they should community governed for more than just fear of stings. Like for disease, neglect,education etc..

Beekeeping: Beginner’s Anxiety?

I installed my first package of bees yesterday, and started to panic a little when they all started flying around me. I kept my cool and finished the job, but after I got inside the house, removed my bee suit and veil, I had an anxiety attack!!

It took me a good two hours to calm down. And as it was getting darker, and I went out to check on the bees, one buzzed by my ear and I panicked again. I kept my cool, but my heart was racing!

I wonder if any other beekeepers felt this way when they started, and it gets better as you work with the bees and become more familiar with them. Or, am I just apiphobic and should give the whole enterprise up?

Why the beekeeper hat is a top priority in beekeeping

This is why the bees usually decide to defend their property by actually stinging the person as hard as they can. The attempt by the bees to protect the beehive from intrusion leads them to sting whoever and whatever comes close to the beehive. Wearing the beekeeper hat is something that will by all means help to safeguard one’s head and face from bee stings because by all means the bees will attack exactly those areas. In certain instances, the bee stings could actually have a fatal effect on someone.

The process of protecting the hive is one that bees execute so efficiently because when swarm in the direction of an intruder, they will almost always swarm towards the head and face. Wearing a beekeeper hat is important because the face and head have some kind of colour which attracts the bees towards the eyes, mouth and head. This is the main reason why most beekeeping attire is designed with fabric that has light colours; the light colours usually act as a form of deflector and the bees do not find much attraction in attacking the person.

 

Another reason for the bees swarming towards the face is because the bees are naturally attracted to the human breath. As such, they will head towards the head as they look for where the breath is coming from and resultantly, they will sting the face therefore the beekeeper hat should be used at all times.

 

The beekeeper hat is very important and in case there is a chance to decide between a beekeeper hat and some other beekeeping item, it would be quite helpful to pick the beekeeper hat because it could save your life.

I ask because my room has had bees in it every morning for a week. When I moved in there were 10 dead ones on the floor. Yesterday, I contacted someone and they removed the hives they found and I believe sprayed. But there is one in my room again this morning. I’m thinking it’s the one that found his way into my room yesterday morning as well and was confused when his hive was gone. How can I tag him so I’ll know if it’s the same bee?

Note: It’s actually a yellowjacket. But people don’t tend to tag those.
