Beekeeping in Florida?

Question by shareefa9876: Beekeeping in Florida?
I read that you need to save about 60 pounds of honey in the hive to get a hive of bees through the winter. Does the milder winter weather in Florida affect this at all–if so, how many frames of honey should I leave in over “winter” to get them through?

The All-Important Beekeepers Suit

While an understanding of bees and their habits is indispensable to successful beekeeping, a well designed beekeeping suit can take most of the worry out of the beekeeping process, a process whose origins are shrouded in the mists of time.
Man has been keeping bees and collecting honey for millenia.  The domestication of bees can be traced back through the ages to ancient Greece and even as far back as ancient Egypt. While the techniques and methods used to keep bees and collect their honey have changed over the millenia, perhaps the most obvious changes have been in the  protective clothing used by beekeepers to prevent excessive stinging, evolving into what is today known as the beekeeping suit.

The Beekeeping Suit
There are three main parts to a beekeeping suit:

* a jacket and overpants (both with elastic at the wrists and ankles) or one-piece jumpsuit
* protective gloves
* a hat or hood with a veil

Defensive bees are attracted to the breath of the beekeeper (or predator), that coupled with the fact that stings on the face and neck are much more prone to excessive pain and swelling leads to it being generally accepted that it is the veil that is the most important part of the beekeeper’s suit.  Even experienced beekeepers usually use a veil in their work, though they may elect not to wear gloves in order to to be able to do the delicate work necessary for keeping up the hives.  In fact, it is highly recommended that beekeepers, especially novice beekeepers, wear a whole beekeeping suit in order to prevent excessive exposure to bee stings.

A beekeeper’s protective suit should generally be light colored (white or a light neutral color is best) and of a smooth material in order to differentiate the beekeeper from a bee colony’s natural predators, most of which are dark and furry.  Also, the smoother the material, the easier it is to remove stingers and venom sacks with just a tug on the cloth.  It should be noted that any stingers remaining in the cloth will continue to emit what is known as an alarm pheromone that will attract aggressive action by more members of the colony, therefore it is highly recommended that all parts of the beekeeping suit be washed regularly.  As a note of interest, the effectiveness of the suit’s gloves can be increased by dipping the gloved hands in vinegar before coming into contact with the bees.

By far the best suits, especially for beginning beekeepers, are the one-piece jumpsuits with an integrated hood and veil.  Some jumpsuits come with elastic at the cuffs and wrists, while others have velcro adjustments that can be used to fit the exact size of the beekeeper’s wrists and ankles. Prices will vary depending on the materials used in the construction of the suit and the size of the person being fitted.  If sized correctly and well-designed, a good beekeeping suit and gloves is an effective protection against all types of stings and can make the beekeeping process a worry free adventure.

The Major Importance of Beekeeper Supplies

Using the right beekeeping supplies is very important. Beekeeping is a job which is exposed to some danger of being stung by the bees. Using the right supplies can minimize this. The supplies are used when extracting the honey and when managing and maintaining the bee colonies in a proper manner.

The major aspect of beekeeping is to ensure the beekeeper’s safety when dealing with the bees. You can do this in several ways. First is to wear a protective. This is an “astronaut like” clothing that covers the beekeeper’s body, especially the beekeeper’s face. A beekeeper gear includes a beekeeping suit, a hat, gloves and veil. Even an experienced beekeeper should use a hat and veil to protect his face.

The beekeeping suit is a full length suit made of white non-penetrable material to protect the beekeeper from bee stings and venoms. Even though some beekeepers do not like to use gloves due to its impracticality, but gloves are important in protecting the beekeepers hand. Hands are the vital body parts in doing a beekeeper job

Another way to protect the beekeeper is to calm down the bees by the means of a beekeeping smoker. This is a tool that can produce smoke using various types of fuel such as twine, hessian, burlap, corrugated card-board, pine needles, or rotten wood. Other alternative fuels are compressed cotton and pulped paper.

Smoke will cause the bees to leave the hive, and at the same time it masks the pheromones that are released by the guard bees when they are sensing danger or an intruder. In such condition the beekeeper can use this opportunity to manage the hive in a more safe way.

A beekeeper supplement in the form of sugar syrup is also needed in some instances. While bees are known to possess the capability to feed them selves with enough food, there is still a possibility that they might face bad times where they can starve due to honey shortage. Here then comes the role of a supplement.

A feeder is needed when the beekeeper wants to feed his bees. Different types of feeders are available. During winter time, hive top or a pail or division boards can be made use as an inside feeder. While in summer time, when the bees are very active outside the hive, the use of an entrance feeder is of most appropriate.

The main part of beekeeping is the way you house the bees. The most common way is to bee colonies in artificial hives. To encourage the bees to build honey combs a beekeeper usually uses a wax base. Such way will be very convenient during harvesting. The base is made of thin wax layer with a hexagonal cell pattern those are embossed at both sides. This will also help the bees to perform an easier job in building their honey combs

Is beekeeping expensive?

Question by Tony Pro: Is beekeeping expensive?
How much is it to start yourself out with a colony, and how expensive is it to maintain?
This is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I have no idea how to go about it.
Quantitative answers would be nice :)

Bees are pretty self sufficient so once you get the boxes and colony started it goes pretty smoothly. You will have to take the honey out and bottle it so there will be that expense.

Required Beekeeper Supplies

Since you can actually get hurt while beekeeping, it’s very important you use the right beekeeper supplies. When you’re properly equipped, the chances of getting stung drop dramatically.

The beekeeper utilizes some supplies to gather honey and other supplies to help manage the beehive. A large part of the beekeeping supply investment goes towards shielding the beekeeper during the time the hive is being taken care of. By wearing protective outerwear; no body parts are exposed to potential stings. The critical outerwear consists of a protective suit, a hat/veil, and gloves.

While working with the hive, the most accessible and painful body spot to get stung would be the face. For that reason, the beekeeper must wear a hat and veil for protection. The beekeeper wears a lightweight suit to shield their body, legs and arms. Despite the material being thinner, the stinger doesn’t puncture it without difficultly. Finally, a beekeeper should wear a pair of gloves to cover the hands. Since wearing gloves can be cumbersome, some beekeepers prefer to wear thinner latex gloves when working with the beehive.

When it comes time to work with the beehive, the bees need to be calmed down. The perfect tool to accomplish that calmness is a beekeeping smoker. This tool emits smoke. Loading the smoker with plenty of fuel, such as wood, rope, cardboard or even pine needles enables the tool to produce the right amount of smoke. Some smokers may even use aerosol canned smoke.

After smoke enters the beehive, the bees begin eating to get ready to leave the hive because they believe fire is on the way. Also, the guard bees send off a warning pheromone signaling the hive has an intruder. The smoke helps hide that pheromone. With the bees focused on the smoke, a beekeeper can then work on the hive without worrying about a defensive bee attack.

When feeding bees additional food, the beekeeper needs a few beekeeper supplies. In general, bees have the ability to go over large distances in order to collect food. However, some beekeepers still add a sweet sugar mixture to their colony. By putting additional food in the hive those beekeepers believe the chance of starvation is reduced should food gathering be tough as well as boosting the chances for increased egg production.

Numerous methods exist for the beekeeper to give extra food to the colony. If food is added during the winter, it should be given through the hive top, pail, or division boards with interior feeders. If food is added during the summer, the entry feeder gives the best results since bees are continually going in and out of the hive.

The single largest portion of the beekeepers supplies would be bee’s home, or hive. The entire colony lives within the hive. The total bee population in the hive can approach 60,000 during the peak season.

A correctly constructed hive is made up of a wax base, which helps the bees build their comb, which in turn makes it easier to gather honey. That foundation consists of a thin wax sheet that contains hexagonal cell designs imprinted on both sides. This design makes the bee production easier when constructing their combs.

Overall, these beekeeper supplies do not represent a large cash investment and are a one-time purchase. Once you have those supplies, you can take pleasure from your beehive for several years.
